When I went out to see Marie Antoinette I was already expecting it to be dissapointing thanks to an unwanted review that my friend left me a few nights ago. But here's the thing, I was upset last night because I hated the way it ended but I woke up today thinking "Hmm...it's not that bad. It's actually kinda good". So I think I wanna see it again. It's turning into one of those movies where you have to watch it a second time to really understand the meaning behind it. I loved "Lost In Translation" so I know Sofia Coppola isn't retarded when it comes to directing. Marie Antoinette was just different--but it's good.

What's even better is the soundtrack. I fell in love with all the songs but I'm putting up my most favorite on this blog today. I guess what's really extraordinary to me is that Marie Antoinette is so unique in its modern rock soundtrack. I've never really liked 80s music but Sofia's choices are astounding. Hong Kong Garden by Siouxsie And The Banshees works so well with Antoinette's daily life. What Ever Happened by The Strokes (okay...not 80s but whatever) is a perfect fit for when she's running down the hall in her uncomfortably long dress and shoes.

Okay, all in all, it was a really pretty film with a pretty score.

I WOKE UP - COOL-T & ONE-T

There's not much info on the net about COOL-T and ONE-T but from what I assume, COOL-T is an artist around my age (17)--the birthdate on the gravestone in "The Magic Key" video begins with 1989. And ONE-T provides the funky beats. I dunno. Point is, their shit is crazy awesome. And Cingular recently used one of their new singles for their female version of the Pantech C300 commercial. I found out the single was called "I Woke Up" about two months ago, but there was no mp3 on the net or info about when it'd be released. Luckily, I just found it about five minutes ago so I uploaded it for you guys. Also, I posted a few music videos of their's and the Cingular commercials. Fall in love.

My brother and I were in the car and this song pops on the radio. I didn't think it was Justin Timberlake at first but then a Google search told me it was. So, I'm really not supposed to be into mainstream because the other stuff I listen to is the stuff of Pitchfork Media. But ever since they gave Fergie's "London Bridge" a 2.0, I've decided to hate them.

My favorite kinds of songs have heavy bass--the kind that makes my ears bleed--and "My Love" is a lovely addition to that collection. It's def a lot better than "SexyBack" because there's an actual beat to this one. Before I go to sleep at night, I usually dance to some song to get rid of any extra energy. I'm gonna shake my junk to this song tonight.

THE DECEMBERISTS - THE CRANE WIFE

Only heard about this about a week ago but The Decemberists are coming out with a new album in October, as well. I caught up on some reading and it seems that "The Crane Wife" is a Japanese folk tale about a poor man who once helped an injured crane and falls in love with a woman. They get married and the woman says she can make the couple rich by spinning great silk cloths as long as the man doesn't watch her make it. Soon he becomes filled with greed and eventually sees her making the silk cloths. It turns out it's a crane who is plucking feathers from the woman's body and weaving them into the loom. The crane flies away after seeing the man.

So, I mean, that sounds like an interesting story to base an album after. The songs that I've heard are pretty awesome. My favorite track so far is "Summersong". I included it with this post. Anywho, the album comes out October 3. Catch it, yo.

It's from the same producer of Green Day's American Idiot and it's pretty obvious--both songs/albums have similarities. (That is not bad!) Personally, I really like MCR's new song. I absolutley suck at updating this thing. It's mainly from being too lazy to find links to new songs I find. So, I think this blog will mainly become a place where I'll promote my projects (such as the mixtape in this post). Something to show off to my future kids, yo. Anywho, a fast update on my life: I've been learning to drive, I took an art class down in DC that was awesome then I went to the beach, went back to school and currently working on college applications.

This mixtape is a small project that I did today just to kick my graphic design skills back into gear. More deets when I'm ready to post the actual album. I made a faux commercial though for it so check it out. I rock!

BRITISH HIPHOP PART ONE

Genpets is a hoax but that didn't stop me from secretly hating myself for wanting one after finding out about it through the magic of Livejournal. The artist, Adam Brandejs, manufactured the idea with the help of his girlfriend and released it to various galleries and a Canadian storefront. The reaction he recieved for the work was utter shock. In fact, "While in the store window of Iodine Toronto, the shop owner began sleeping in the store as many nights, people would bang at the windows furiously" (Brandejs' official site) This is probably exactly what Brandejs was expecting or hoping for (in a sense). Brandejs says: "If you’re still caught up on whether they’re real or not, that’s ok, a lot of people are, but that’s not the point of the work. Slow down, stop, and think. Think about why it is that you probably, like most people seeing the work, find it highly disturbing on some level, and yet, still want to buy one. Why is it that you’re so inclined to buy things, no matter what? And what is it that makes this concept so disturbing, or not disturbing to you? Consider both sides of the issue, and consider how we treat animals in farms, and pet stores today. How does that relate?" (ibid)

I have to say, the reasoning/motivation for this work is a lot more creative and thought-provoking than, say, Damien Hirst's The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living (which sounds a lot like a Brand New song). It's amazing how a shark in formaldehyde can be considered art. Now I shouldn't have to worry about getting into college. My portfolio can be filled with buckets of vomit and all I have to do to get into RISD is say that the puke represents the ever-growing materialistic personalities of today's society. Smart move, Jon. Getting a Bachelor's in art should be easy as cake.

With the recently announced free EP from Adult Swim and Chocolate Industries, "Cholocate Swim", I've been listening to more British hiphop. I never really liked Lady Sovereign--"Ch Ching" kind of bothered me--but my feelings have changed since I spent the majority of last night listening to her song and the various remixes of "Hoodie" And speaking of the British hiphop scene, I now have more reason to talk about Lily Allen (a.k.a. my girlfriend).

Lily Allen is about to release her first full-length album next (this) month. That's exciting. But from the looks of Amazon.com, Lily's debut is just going to be an import. That means there goes another artist mainstream music America will probably never hear. Which is too bad cause I bet a lot of people would enjoy her sultry summer sounds. Of course the scenester in me is super glad she'll stay underground in America. I would totally hate it if one of my "friends" who listens to Teddy Geiger and Black Eyed Peas (or Nickelback *shivers*) told me they love Lily Allen. I'd throw away my entire music library and set myself on fire. (LOLSIKE) Whatevs, I still have a bunch more free (illegal) Lily Allen downloads you can enjoy.

Back to Lady Sovereign...I don't really know how to start talking about her. Maybe, if you've never heard her before, be prepared for a very distinctive voice. It could be passed off as annoying and it might take a few listens before one starts to really appreciate her stuff. The more I listen to "Ch Ching" and "Gatheration" I start liking it a lot more. Lady Sovereign has a more upfront, sweet-yet-tart voice that's pleasingly fast at times (similar to Ludacris) unlike Allen's voice which is quieter and oddly more feminine. The most attractive thing about Lady Sovereign is emphasized in her track "Hoodie" where the chorus makes her voice sickenly cute. So cute in fact that I wouldn't mind consuming her flesh. Listen and tell me you wouldn't want to do the same.

The Ordinary Boys and Lady Sovereign collaborated on the song "Nine2Five" - it's really catchy and I'm not afraid to admit that I sung it out loud to myself as I was showering this afternoon.

Getting my blood taken out--I had a doctor's appointment--puts me in the mood for some screamo-rock-emo-metal-gospel-jazz fusion. Thank the heavens for the band It Dies Today whom can cover all of those genres in one song. The band is still a few months away from releasing their second album (due this September) but in the meantime, I can catch up and listen to some classics like "Freak Gasoline Fight Accident" and "Blood Stained Bed Sheet Burden". For further excitment, enjoy getting blinded by the pasty complexion of lead singer/"lead-person-with-frog-in-throat", Nick Brooks. I wonder how it feels to never go out in the Sun.

Ryan (a.k.a. the asian who probably didn't show up or I would've seen him) noted that there was a free concert at the Strathmore last night so I went with Rach and her fiance, Sala. The headlining band(?, not really) thur was called "Cascade In Blue" whose music style is a crockpot of orchestral instruments and rock music. The fusion is purdy and I highly recommended a visit to their purevolume, myspace, livejournal, deathjournal and/or deviantart pages.

Thankfully to the internetz, it looks like "Happy Hollow" has been leaked--"Happy Hollow" is the new Cursive album. Turn your speakers down for "Big Bang" because the first few seconds of the song sound like someone's screaming. A lot of "critics" believe the album isn't going to be as high caliber as "The Ugly Organ" but listen to "Dorthory Dreams of Tornadoes" and you might think different. Enjoy!

And because I normally just listen to Rach when it comes to anything Saddle Creek Records related, I overlooked this band called Criteria. The band was created by Steve Pedersen, a former member of Cursive. Criteria formed in 2001 after Pedersen wanted to go solo. His first album, "En Garde" was pretty much a Bright Eyes deal where Pedersen was the leading man and there were instruments (people) to back him up. Later, Criteria transformed into more of a rock band and released their second album on Saddle Creek after their original label went bankrupt. All downloadable songs are taken from the Saddle Creek website which means they are legal-probably the only legal downloads you'll ever find on this bbblog. (sike?)

Three years ago, Fannypack brought the classic ode to genitalia to the table with their hit "Cameltoe". Thought to be a one hit wonder, Fannypack comes back (approximately a year ago, but I wasn't paying attention)--first blasting a new track that was featured in the movie "Stick It" (Nu Nu Yeah Yeah)--with a tribute to Indian hip-hop called "Fire Fire" featuring Mr. Vegas. Their sound is definitely more grown up and sounds more reminiscent to the Pussycat Dolls than the gangster, Queens, New York-esque attitude portrayed in their debut "So Stylistic". Not to say that one is better than the other because, like Bright Eyes' "Digital Ash in a Digital Urn" and "I'm Wide Awake It's Morning", both need to be judged separately.

Look, either way, their songs are perfect for when I'm dancing in my room late at night, staring into the mirror as I think how horribly disgusting my adolescent body is and hoping that maybe my mind will come to accept my constantly changing physique.

It's way too easy to dismiss a lot of punkrawk music lately because I'm reminded how much it's made fun of. Really not looking to be labeled a "Lame Emo Fag". Then again, a lot of the bands I learned about last night sound incredibly similar (they're probably all the same people). On iTunes, there's this band called Moneen and one customer review said "The new improvement leads me to believe it is [Moneen] on par with bands like Dead Poetic, Funeral for a Friend, or Scary Kids Scaring Kids". That's not really much of a compliment if not an insult.

I was really looking forward to listening to more music by Gatsby's American Dream--was hoping they might have an ode to Myrtle whose breast was torn apart after being hit with Jay Gatsby's car in F. Scott Fitzgerald's great American novel (Did you know: F. Scott Fitzgerald is pretty much buried in my backyard. A church in the town of Rockville, Maryland holds his grave. I know where I'm hanging out this weekend.)--but of course, you can't distinguish them from Fallout Boy and therefore liking one of their songs means I'm going to be judged for a long time and probably labeled derogatory, degrading names like "Conor Oberst"

guh...

But why should I conform to a society where the music norm is Papoose and Daddy Yankee's "Gasolina"? What if ethnic pride for me isn't singing about how I want to spray cum in a girl's face (read Gasolina lyrics)? Why can't I celebrate my white heritage in clothes from Hot Topic (or conversely, Torrid) and iPods filled to the brim with The Used? Wouldn't any attacks against this culture be a hate crime against my ethnicity?

Not really.

I'm Jewish. My ethnicity is bagels and klezmer music.

If anything, my iPod is filled to the brim with Matisyahu.

I WISH I WERE ME

I bought the new issue of Blender today so I'm feeling pretty confident that I have amazing music taste. I am awesome. But aside from what everyone already knows, Blender referred me back to the news that Keane is releasing a new album sometime soon. Not like I really care because my brother listens to Keane and I can't really listen to anything my brother does cause he also listens to Jason Mraz. On the other hand, there are two songs that I am liking/starting to grow on me (like a fungus). Here's the thing though, Keane is more of a band that you'd listen to when you want to either, a) cut yourself or b) sleep. I come to this conclusion because they're only played at the most depressing parts of The O.C. (totally emoz) and I usually sleep to "Walnut Tree". Look, in any event, you're going to like what I post because I have the best musical taste in the tri-state area.

I'm pretty sure I just found my girlfriend. She's a class-A lady. The only downside is that it's kind of hard to tell the difference between this gal and Lady Sovereign-both white, British girls who use their deadly voices to produce some sick reggae/dancehall beats.
